The Maryville Treatment Center lies on 44 acres that was purchased by the Department of Corrections from the Sisters of St. Francis in June of 1995. The facility began operation on December 3, 1996. The institution is a minimum-security (custody level 2) correctional treatment facility with a capacity to house 525 offenders. Its missions is "to return recovering offenders to society as productive, responsible and law-abiding citizens." That mission is accomplished by providing the offenders with alcohol and substance abuse treatment in a therapeutic learning environment and by providing a transitional preparation segment to ensure their successful acclimation into society.

The Department of Corrections provides substance abuse treatment services through the Division of Adult Institutions, Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services and the Gateway Foundation. MTC utilizes the Therapeutic Community Model which provides a holistic approach in its delivery of treatment services to offenders who have been stipulated by the Parole Board for treatment services. Therapeutic Community (TC) is at the core of the institution's treatment. The TC Model is designed to achieve a global change in the lifestyle of the offender. From the TC perspective, substance abuse is a disorder of the whole person and while the focus of treatment is on maintaining a drug and alcohol free existence, the aim of the rehabilitation approach is to achieve that global change in lifestyle. TC provides the foundation on which positive socialization and pro-social attitudes and behaviors, good citizenship and a willingness to accept responsibility for one's actions can be developed.

The Maryville Treatment Center provides a six-month treatment program and a one-year treatment program. All offenders are also involved in the Missouri Reentry Process which is designed to help offenders achieve a successful transition back into society. Thereby accomplishing our mission "to return recovering offenders to society as productive, responsible and law-abiding citizens."

The Maryville Treatment Center currently employs 206 Department of Corrections personnel and 33 contractual personnel (Correctional Medical Services and Gateway staff).
